Jones Soda, the maker of cult-favourite soft drinks with flavours ranging from Fun, Chocolate Fudge to Mashed Potato, has entered into a Letter of Intent with its rival, Reed’s, to be acquired for a deal worth approximately $10 million. The arrangement is being recognized as a severely discounted deal.

Jones shareholders will receive 4.5 million shares of Reed’s common stock and cash of 0.10 per share, worth about $2.6 million.

Around for 22 years, Jones Soda was profitable for most of its history. By 2007 Jones was struggling due to its failed expansion efforts which came around the time as the economy started experiencing difficulties and the soda maker was seeing a shrinkage in sales.

Jones Soda posted a loss of $1.5 million in the quarter ending September 30th, 2009, ending the quarter with $6 million in cash, down from $11.7 million it had nine months earlier.

Shares of Jones Soda traded the day in a range of 0.48 to 0.73, down 6.90%, closing at 0.54.

Reed’s Inc. (NASDAQ: REED), traded between 1.58 and 1.85, closing down 2.79% at 1.74. Reed announced that it has established a working relationship with Associated Wholesale Grocers. Associated Wholesale Grocers has authorized six SKUs for the Reed’s Ginger Brew line and six SKUs for Virgil’s Soda line. Associated Wholesale Grocers is a retailer-owned cooperative which serves over 1900 retail member stores and 600 affiliates stores. AWG recorded sales of $6.9 billion in 2008. Reed’s Inc. makes sodas for the natural food markets in the U.S.

Cott Corporation (NYSE: COT) shares of COT traded the day between 6.81 and 7.13, up 3.48% at 7.14. COT hit a 52 week-high last November at 9.39. COT announced its fourth quarter and fiscal year 2009 results, citing a revenue decline for the 2009 fiscal year of 3.1% to $1.6 billion; gross margin as a percentage of sales increased to 15.6% from 11.0%; operating income increased to $97.4 million from a loss of $113.0 million. For the fourth quarter of 2009 revenue increased 3.9% to $386 million, operating income increased to $13.9 million from a loss of $15.6 million. Cott Corporation is a non-alcoholic beverage company operating facilities in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Mexico. Cott markets its non-alcoholic beverage concentrates in over 50 countries around the world.

Celsius Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: CELH), traded in the range of 2.93 and 3.20, up 7.38% closing at 3.20. Shares of CELH hit a 52 week-high of 14.00 back in July 2009. Celsius Holdings announced that it has converted its common stock, around $5.1 million of its convertible debt and the remaining preferred shares. CDS Ventures LLC has agreed to convert $4.5 million of the $6.5 million outstanding balance of its convertible debt to common stock. Celsius’ CFO, Geary Cotton, stated that “With the exception of the $2 million of remaining convertible debt the company is essentially debt free. With this announcement, and the recent secondary offering, shareholders equity has increased by approximately $18 million. The number of outstanding shares of common stock is today 18.4 million, not including outstanding options and warrants.” Celsius Holdings is focused to providing healthier, everyday refreshment through science and innovation.

Dr. Pepper Snapple Group Inc. (NYSE: DPS), is a manufacturer and distributor of non-alcoholic beverages in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Caribbean with a portfolio of flavoured carbonated and non-carbonated beverages of brands such as Dr. Pepper, Sunkist soda, 7UP, A&W, Canada Dry, Crush, Squirt, Penafiel, Schweppes and Venom Energy, Snapple, Mott’s, Hawaiian Punch, Clamato, Rose’s and Mr & Mrs T mixers. Shares of DPS traded in the range of 33.25 to 33.85, up 0.54% to 33.65. Dr. Pepper Snapple Group announced that it has completed the licensing of certain brands to PepsiCo, Inc. Under the transaction DPS received a one-time cash payment of $900 million before taxes and other related fees and expenses. Portion of the proceeds were used to reduce its total debt obligations to $2.55 billion, in-line with its target capital structure of approximately 2.25 times total debt to EBITDA after certain adjustments.

A shopping giant is bouncing back; market update on the retail sector including Neiman Marcus, Ann Taylor Stores Corporation, Bebe Stores Inc. and The Talbots Inc.

Neiman Marcus has posted their fiscal second quarter earnings and confirmed that luxury shoppers are returning to their favourite past time. Neiman Marcus has turned a profit on lower expenses and higher holiday sales.

Slowly but surely Neiman Marcus’ approach is working. Customers are responding to promotions, such as limited midday Internet shopping events, in-store designer visits and a daily iPhone app deal. Burt Tansky, President and CEO of Neiman Marcus, stated that the chains approach has shifted from a defensive mode to an offensive one.

Neiman Marcus is looking into opening up smaller Last Call clearance stores which will be geared towards those customers who don’t usually shop at Neiman Marcus. Tansky commented that “the aspirational customer is a little more comfortable than a year ago. That customer was hit hard a year ago and vacated our stores, and we’ve been working hard to bring them back.”

For the quarter ending January 30, Neiman Marcus posted a profit of $4 million, compared to a loss of $509.2 million the year prior. Operating profit doubled to $67.1 million in the second quarter compared to a $32.6 million last year. Total sales at the chain’s 77 stores increased 2.1% to $1.1 billion from $1.08 billion a year earlier. Same-store sales increased 0.6% from the same quarter a year ago.

Ann Taylor Stores Corporation (NYSE: ANN), reported back in February that do to stronger than anticipated fourth quarter sales and a gross margin rate that was higher than expected Ann Taylor is looking to report bottom-line performance for the fiscal fourth quarter of 2009 that will exceed expectations and be substantially higher than the fourth quarter of 2008. Based on preliminary fourth quarter results, Ann Taylor shares an update on its November 2009 outlook stating net sales for the fiscal fourth quarter of 2009 are expected to approach $470 million, compared to its prior outlook for sales to decline slightly from $462.4 million reported in the third quarter of 2009. ANN is trading in the range between 18.65 and 19.19, staying close to its 52 week-high of 18.88 from yesterday. On March 12, 2009, ANN hit its 52 week-low of 2.75.

Bebe Stores Inc. (NASDAQ: BEBE) announced its financial results for the second quarter ending January 2, 2010. Net sales for the second quarter of fiscal 2010 were $141.5 million, down 22.2% from $181.9 million for the same period last year. Comparable store sales for the quarter declined 22.5% compared to a decrease of 20.1% in the prior year. Gross margin as a percentage of net sales increased to 39.2% in the second quarter of fiscal 2010, compared to 38.6% in the second quarter of fiscal 2009. Bebe stores, inc. designs, develops and produces a line of contemporary women’s apparel and accessories. Shares of BEBE are trading between 8.84 and 8.96, up 1.36% or 0.12 at 8.94.

The Talbots Inc. (NYSE: TLB) is trading in the range of 11.23 and 11.57, up 2.04% or 0.23 cents at 11.49. Talbots announced a promotion of Lizanne Kindler to Executive Vice President, General Merchandise Manager. Ms. Kindler will now oversee merchandise strategy and direction for Talbots core apparel, shoe and accessories businesses across all channels, and will report to Chief Executive Officer Trudy Sullivan. Talbots Inc. is a leading speciality retailer and direct marketer of women’s apparel, shoes and accessories. At the end of fourth quarter 2009, Talbots Inc. operated 580 brand stores in 46 states, the District of Columbia, and Canada.

What a difference a year makes. It was a year ago today on March 9, 2009, that shares of Apple hit its 52 week-low of 82.57 to hit the new 52 week high today of 224.80. During the Academy Awards this past Sunday, Apple Inc. launched its commercial of the iPad tablet. It is being reported that the new iPad tablet from Apple will be available on April 3rd and pre-orders start March 12, 2010.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) has been busy breaking its record. Apple hit a 52 week high last week of 219.70, to hit a new high yesterday of 220.09 only to surpass that high today at 224.80. All things are moving along smoothly for the awaited released of the iPad tablet. Last week, it was announced that Apple is suing HTC of infringing on 20 of its patents related to the iPhone’s user interface, underlying architecture and hardware. HTC is a maker of smartphones using Google’s Andriod system, which are becoming a growing competitor to the iPhone. Shares of Apple are trading today between 217.89 and 224.80. Apple is up 2.64% or 5.78 cents at 224.86.

Dell Inc. (NASDAQ: DELL) announced that their new Dell OptiPlex 980 Desktop has been made available which is now the most energy efficient commercial desktop available from Dell. The Dell FX100 Zero Client Solutions centralizes the desktop with the performance of flexibility of a traditional PC. Shares of Dell are trading between 13.88 and 14.40, up 2.21% or 0.31 at 14.32. The 52 week-high for Dell sits at 17.26 from August 2009. Dell Inc. offers desktop PCs, software and peripherals, servers and networking, services and storage.

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT), announced that it will contribute $2 million in cash and up to $6 million in software over the next two years to support programs for members of the armed services and their family. Microsoft aims to bring together public, private and non profit organizations to aid in their support. This is aimed to give veterans and their spouses skills and resources to be able to take part in the working world. Microsoft Corporation focuses on developing, manufacturing, licensing and supporting a range of software products and services for different types of computing devices. Shares of Microsoft are trading today between 28.55 and 29.11, up 1.26% or 0.36 at 28.99. MSFT hit its 52 week-high of 31.50 this past December.

Research in Motion (NASDAQ: RIMM), is trading the day between 73.50 and 74.65, up 0.61% or 0.451 cents at 73.841. Late last month it was announced that Slacker, Inc. would make available the Slacker Radio 3.0 for BlackBerry® smartphones from Research In Motion. People will now be able to store their favourite Slacker stations wirelessly and directly to their BlackBerry smartphones. Analysts have also upgraded Research In Motion as they are expecting the Blackberry maker to report strong quarterly results and a profitable outlook. Palm Inc. (NASDAQ: PALM) provides mobile products to individuals and businesses worldwide. Palm’s products include Palm Pre, Treo and Centro. Palm announced that a public beta version of the Palm® webOS™ Plug-in Development Kit (PDK) has been made available at the Palm Developer Centre. PALM hit its 52 week-high this past September of 18.09 and a 52 week-low yesterday of 5.48. It may be a while before things move along as PALM hit even lower today at 5.46 and traded at a high of 5.75. Some are left wondering if PALM will survive in the market as Blackberry and the iPhone are severe competitor for this mobile product provider. The company has also provided a warning that they do not think their smartphone sales for the year will reach their desired target. Shares of PALM are up 1.62%, or 0.09 cents and are trading at $5.64.

IKTO is going into high gear, expect heavy trading today

IKTO is up 12% on its 50 day moving average. These are strong gains for IKTO and it’s a good set up to move even more from here. Once it gets past the 0.62 high it is set to reach $1.50 and we expect the story on IKTO to get even better.

BT has been sniffing around the Bay Area for startups to acquire for some time and this one is a great fit. PTM reports on Japan Airlines and provides market update on US carriers

The Manila Bulletin reported that Japan Airlines has posted a net loss of $2 billion in the nine months to December. Last month Japan Airlines filed for bankruptcy protection with total debt of 26 billion dollars. Japan Airlines reported an operating loss of 120.8 billion yen on sales revenue of 1.14 trillion yen, down 27% from the same time last year.

Japan Airlines issued an apology to its shareholders, creditors and the public about its failure and short comings but offered no outlook for the future as its future plans have yet to be finalized.

Shares of Japan Airlines were delisted from the Tokyo Stock Exchange on February 19, 2010. The article written in The Manila Bulletin reported that Japan Airlines rejected the offer to team up with SkyTeam alliance, which includes Delta Airlines and would focus on its tie-up with American Airlines and its Oneworld partners.

Aside from the bankruptcy update on Japan Airlines, it is shaping out to be a green day for the American airline industry.

Delta Air Lines Inc. (NYSE: DAL), is trading on gains today of 4.10% or 0.53 cents at 13.45, reaching a high of 13.50 and a low of 12.93. Shares of DAL reached their 52 week-high on January 22, 2010 at 13.73. On Friday, Delta announced that the majority of their flight simulator technicians rejected union representation by the International Association of Machinists (IAM). Ninety-one flight simulator technicians were eligible to vote and of those only 40 voted in favour of IAM representation. Delta Air Lines serves more than 160 million passengers each year offering services to 367 destinations in 66 countries on six continents.

Southwest Airlines Inc. (NYSE: LUV), is trading the day between 12.59 and 12.89 surpassing its previous 52 week-high of 12.73, which it hit just last week. Southwest Airlines is reporting that its pilots are urging Senators to oppose attempts to punish, instead of protecting pilots who voluntarily report errors through the current safety programs which include the “black box” cockpit voice recordings. Southwest pilots are worried that the NTSB recommendation would put at risk voluntary reporting program integrity that has been successful in increasing airline safety. Southwest Airlines services 68 cities in 35 states, operating more than 3,100 flights a day with approximate 35,000 employees system wide.

SkyWest, Inc. (NASDAQ: SKYW), reported on their Q4 earnings ending December 31, 2009, with operating revenues of $604.4 million compared to $743.3 million for the same period last year. Net income was $19.5 million or $0.34 per diluted share compared to $21.2 million of net income or $0.37 per diluted share, for the same quarter last year. SkyWest also reported operating revenues of $2.61 billion for the year ended December 31, 2009, compared to $3.50 billion for the year ended December 31, 2008. SkyWest reported net income of $83.7 million or $1.47 per diluted share, for the year ended December 31, 2009, compared to $112.9 million of net income, or $1.93 per diluted share for the year ended December 31, 2008. SkyWest operates approximately 2,300 daily departures to 218 destinations in the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. Shares of SKYW are trading on gains of 3.52 % or 0.52 cents at 15.28, trading the day in the range of 14.83 to 15.28.

JetBlue Airways Corporation (NASDAQ: JBLU), is trading on gains today of 0.95% at 5.33, hitting the day’s high of 5.41 and a low of 5.30, with its 52 week-high sitting at 6.87 from back in September 2009. JetBlue Airways is a New York based airline serving 60 cities with 600 flights daily. JetBlue offers a complimentary in-flight e-mail and instant messaging services on aircraft “BetaBlue”, which is a first among U.S. domestic airlines. JetBlue also expanded its service between Orlando International Airport and Montego Bay’s Sangster International Airport in Jamaica. The new daily flight is JetBlue’s 23rd nonstop destination and its 6th international destination from Orlando International. JetBlue has also celebrated its 10th anniversary.
